Excavator Shears

What are Excavator Shears?

Excavator shears is another name for mobile shears, which are hydraulic cutting attachments that have a moveable upper jaw with blades and a fixed lower jaw with blades. They are called excavator shears because they mount onto, and can be removed from, hydraulic excavators, mini-excavators and skid steers.

Excavator shears are mobile, meaning they can be moved from one location to another, and most have jaws that are permanently attached to the shear body. Some models, however, feature jaws, called interchangeable, that can be removed and replaced with a different jaw type, such as a concrete cracker, to meet the needs of the application.

Excavator shears are commonly used in a wide variety of scrap processing and recycling and demolition and demolition material recycling applications. They remove and/or downsize ferrous and non-ferrous materials, such as steel, rebar and aluminum, so the material can be transported/recycled/disposed.

Some excavator shears can be used for multiple purposes, such as scrap processing and demolition, and are called scrap shears or demolition shears, while others are designed for specific uses only and classified as rebar shears, subsea shears, and rail breakers or rail shears.

Important considerations when selecting excavator shears are:

  • Jaw opening and depth
  • Attachment reach
  • Attachment weight
  • If rotation is required
  • Max cutting force
  • Jaw change-out process
